Dry Cleaning Franchise Cost in India: What You Actually Pay For
What a dry cleaning franchise costs in India — the four buckets your money goes into, what the brand's fee should cover, and what sits on top of it.
Quick answer: a dry cleaning franchise cost in India has four parts, not one — the setup payment made to the brand, civil and interior work at actuals, working capital for the opening months, and royalty once the store is profitable. Any quote that shows you only the first number is incomplete. For reference, an AnyDry studio is ₹12.97 lakh plus GST paid to AnyDry for the setup, with interiors at actuals and roughly three months of working capital budgeted on top.
The four buckets your money goes into
Most people compare franchises on one headline figure. That figure is one of four, and the other three decide how the first year goes.
- The setup payment to the brand. Equipment, branding, training, systems and launch support. This is the number brands advertise.
- Civil and interior work. Flooring, electricals, plumbing, drainage, signage and the shopfront. This depends entirely on the site you take, which is why honest brands quote it at actuals rather than inventing an average.
- Working capital. Rent, staff salaries, electricity, water, chemicals and packaging for the months before the store is paying for itself. Budget roughly three months of it.
- Royalty and running costs. The ongoing share the brand takes, plus your monthly operating costs.
Add the first three together and you have your real cost of opening. Treat the fourth as the cost of staying open.
What the brand's fee should cover
Ask any franchisor for an itemised list before you pay anything. For a compact studio store, the setup should realistically include:
- A commercial washing machine and a semi-automatic machine for smaller and delicate loads. AnyDry studios run imported South Korean machines.
- Finishing equipment — a steam iron table, and steam formers for structured garments like blazers and jackets.
- A spotting station with professional chemicals, where stains are treated by hand before anything goes into a machine. AnyDry uses German chemicals and perc-free hydrocarbon dry cleaning.
- A voltage stabiliser. Power fluctuation is one of the most common reasons commercial machines fail.
- Branding and signage, and billing and tagging so every garment is traceable to an order.
- Training for you and your staff, and support through the opening weeks.
If a brand cannot tell you what is inside its number, that is your answer.
What sits on top, and why nobody can quote it exactly
Interiors are site-specific. A shell that already has three-phase power, water and drainage costs a fraction of one that needs all three run in. This is genuinely unknowable until the site is finalised — so be suspicious of a brand that quotes interiors as a tidy round figure, and equally of one that pretends the cost does not exist.
The same goes for licences. Most stores need GST registration, registration under the state's Shops and Establishments Act and a trade licence from the local municipal body; larger processing units may need State Pollution Control Board consent for wastewater. Requirements and fees vary by state and city, so confirm the list and the amounts with a local chartered accountant rather than taking any brand's word for it.
Why a franchise "under ₹5 lakh" is usually something else
Very low entry figures almost always buy a collection point — a counter that takes orders and sends the cleaning out to someone else's plant. It is a real business model and the cheapest way in, but be clear about what you are buying: you control neither the quality nor the timeline, while your shopfront takes every complaint.
A studio store with its own machines costs more because the machines, the finishing equipment and the training are real costs that cannot be wished away. What you get for it is control — and control is what makes customers come back. In AnyDry's network, around eighty per cent of a mature store's revenue comes from customers who already know the store.
Royalty: when the meter starts matters more than the rate
Two franchises can both quote 8% royalty and be completely different propositions, depending on when that 8% begins.
AnyDry charges 8% royalty plus GST only after your store breaks even, with a one-time franchise fee for lifetime and no security deposit. The reason that structure matters is cash flow: royalty from month one comes out of the same thin months your working capital is meant to cover. When you compare offers, ask for the trigger, not just the percentage.
Also ask what the brand keeps: an exclusive territory with one partner per zone protects the customer base you spend a year building. Without it, your brand can sell the next street to someone else.
Running costs and the seasons
Your monthly costs are rent, staff, electricity and water, chemicals, packaging and delivery. A 200–300 sq ft studio with two or three trained staff keeps those fixed costs small, which is what lets a store reach break-even sooner.
Plan for seasonality too. In AnyDry's network, July to September is the monsoon dip, when dry-clean demand falls and weekly laundry and B2B accounts hold the base; November to March is the peak for woollens, coats and wedding wear. Stores also open roughly three-quarters laundry-led and are typically dry-clean-led by year two — which changes your revenue mix without changing your rent.
Questions to ask before you sign anything
- What exactly is inside the setup figure, line by line?
- What is quoted at actuals, and what is fixed?
- When does royalty start, and on what is it calculated?
- Is there a security deposit, and is it refundable?
- Is the territory exclusive, and how is it defined?
- How long from site finalisation to opening?
- What training and support continue after the launch month?
- What happens if a machine fails in year one?
