How Often Should You Dry Clean a Suit?

Less often than you think. When a suit actually needs dry cleaning, how to keep it fresh between cleans, and the habits that make a good suit last for years.

Quick answer: for a suit worn regularly to the office, dry clean it every four to six wears — sooner if it is stained or smells of sweat, and always before storing it for a season. In between, brush it, rest it and steam it. Cleaning too often wears out the fabric and the finish.

Why cleaning less is better for a suit

Every cleaning cycle and every hard press puts the cloth and the internal structure of a jacket through some stress. Over-cleaned suits lose their lustre and drape, and pressed seams start to shine. A suit that is looked after between cleans needs far fewer trips to the cleaner.

Clean it straight away when

  • There is a food, oil or drink stain — the sooner it is treated, the better the result.
  • It smells of sweat or smoke after a long day. In a Gurugram summer, that may be after every couple of wears.
  • Perfume or deodorant has marked the lining or underarms.
  • You are putting it away for the season. Moths go for soiled wool.

Keep it fresh between cleans

  1. Brush it after wearing. A soft clothes brush lifts dust and lint before it works into the cloth.
  2. Hang it on a shaped hanger. Broad, shoulder-shaped wooden hangers hold the jacket's structure; thin wire hangers distort it.
  3. Rest it for a day. Wool recovers its shape when it rests for 24 hours between wears. Rotate two or three suits if you can.
  4. Steam, don't iron. A steamer relaxes creases and refreshes the cloth without flattening it.
  5. Empty the pockets. Phones and wallets stretch pockets and drag the line of the jacket.

Clean the jacket and trousers together

Trousers get dirty faster, so it is tempting to clean them alone. Over time, that makes them fade differently from the jacket. Clean the two pieces together so they age evenly.

Pressing vs dry cleaning

If the suit is clean but creased — after travel, or a long day sitting — it only needs a press, not a clean. Our steam press uses industrial steam so collars sit and lapels keep their roll.

Linen and cotton suits

Some linen and cotton suits are washable; follow the care label. Structured jackets in any fabric keep their shape better when dry cleaned and finished on a former.

When to hand it to us

Structured suits and blazers are finished on steam formers so shoulders and lapels keep their shape, and everything else is hand-pressed. See our dry cleaning or book a pickup — the rider counts every piece with you at the door.
