Opening a Franchise Business: From Shortlist to Day One

Opening a franchise business, step by step — how to check the brand, find a site, handle licences and staff, and what really happens before you open.

Quick answer: opening a franchise business runs in four stages — checking the brand and its terms, finalising a site, completing licences and the fit-out, then training and launch. The stage that decides your timeline is the site, not the paperwork: once a site is finalised, an AnyDry dry cleaning and laundry studio takes 21–30 days to open. Budget the setup payment, interiors at actuals and roughly three months of working capital before you sign anything.

What opening a franchise business actually involves

People picture the signing. In practice, signing is a short afternoon in the middle of a process that is mostly two things: judging whether the brand is worth your money, and finding four walls that will not fight you.

Everything else — machines, branding, training, billing — is work the franchisor has already done many times. Your two real decisions are the brand and the site. Get those right and the rest is a checklist.

Before you sign: the checks that matter

Do these in order, and do not skip to the lease.

  1. Ask for the costs line by line. Not one headline number. For reference, an AnyDry studio is ₹12.97 lakh plus GST paid to AnyDry for the setup, with civil and interior work at actuals and roughly three months of working capital budgeted on top.
  2. Ask when royalty starts. The trigger matters more than the rate. AnyDry charges 8% royalty plus GST only after the store breaks even, with a one-time franchise fee for lifetime and no security deposit.
  3. Ask how the territory is defined. An exclusive territory with one partner per zone protects the customer base you will spend a year building. Without it, the brand can sell the next street to someone else.
  4. Ask what the brand runs itself. A franchisor that operates its own stores has learned the operational problems you are about to meet. There are 5 AnyDry network stores open in Gurugram and 8 more opening across Delhi NCR, alongside 3 franchise partnerships.
  5. Have the agreement read by your own professional. A chartered accountant or lawyer of your choosing, not one the brand suggests.

If a brand will not put its answers in writing, you have learned something useful and it has cost you nothing.

Finding the site — this is where timelines slip

A compact dry cleaning and laundry studio of 200–300 sq ft is enough, which widens your options considerably. What to look for, in rough order of importance:

  • Three-phase power, or the ability to get it sanctioned. Machines and finishing equipment need it, and retrofitting it is slow and expensive.
  • Water supply and proper drainage. A shell that already has both costs a fraction of one that needs them run in.
  • Ground floor with a visible shopfront on a road people already walk down. A studio tucked inside a building loses walk-in orders permanently.
  • Residential density within a short drive. Households and working professionals are the base; offices and salons come later as B2B accounts.

This is the one part where hurrying costs you for the whole life of the store, so let it take as long as it takes. AnyDry's expansion markets are Gurugram, Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad and Sonipat, and a zone is held for one partner — so the search is for the right site inside your zone, not a race against other franchisees.

Licences, registration and the paperwork

Run this in parallel with the fit-out, not after it. In general terms, a store of this kind needs GST registration, registration under the state's Shops and Establishments Act and a trade licence from the local municipal body; a larger processing unit may also need State Pollution Control Board consent for wastewater. If you are taking a loan, have the sanction in place before interiors start.

Requirements, documents and fees differ by state and city and they change. Confirm the exact list and the costs with a local chartered accountant rather than any brand's summary, including this one.

Fit-out, equipment and training

Once the site is finalised, the clock becomes predictable: an AnyDry studio opens in 21–30 days. That window covers civil and electrical work, the shopfront and signage, installation and commissioning of equipment, and training.

The equipment side of a studio store is a commercial washing machine plus a semi-automatic for smaller and delicate loads, a steam iron table, steam formers for structured garments like blazers, a spotting station where stains are treated by hand before anything goes into a machine, and a voltage stabiliser — power fluctuation is one of the most common reasons commercial machines fail. AnyDry studios run imported South Korean machines with German chemicals and perc-free hydrocarbon dry cleaning, under an ISO 9001:2015 certified system (Certificate No. EU/QMS/00332, EU Certification Limited).

Staffing is 2–3 trained people. Train them on the counter process as seriously as on the machines: counting and tagging every garment against a numbered ticket at the door, and confirming the price before cleaning, is what prevents most disputes later.

What the first months look like

Three things are worth knowing before you open, because they are normal and they surprise people.

  • The mix shifts. Stores open roughly three-quarters laundry-led and are typically dry-clean-led by year two. Your first months will look more like weekly washing than premium dry cleaning.
  • There is a season. July to September is the monsoon dip; November to March is the peak for woollens, coats and wedding wear. Opening ahead of the peak gives you a better first quarter.
  • Repeat customers are the business. In AnyDry's network, around eighty per cent of a mature store's revenue comes from customers who already know the store. The free re-clean if an issue is reported within 24 hours, and the care guarantee covering damage or loss up to ₹3,000 per bill, exist for exactly that reason — the second order is worth more than the first.

Start the process with AnyDry

If a dry cleaning and laundry studio is the business you are weighing, the next step is the numbers for your own zone: itemised setup costs, the revenue mix and a month-by-month first-year model are sent with your enquiry, followed by a short call. AnyDry is a brand of Rentia Space Pvt. Ltd.
